Jay McLeod graduated with a law degree from the University of Western Ontario in 1971. He received a Masters of Law from the University of London in 1972, and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1974.
Jay was the author and editor of several leading family law publications including the Annual Review of Family Law, the Reports of Family Law, the Canadian Family Law Quarterly, and Matrimonial Property Law in Canada. He also acted as a family law consultant to the Canadian Bar Association and the provincial and federal governments. His works were cited with approval by every court in the country, including the Supreme Court of Canada.
During his thirty-three years as a professor, Jay taught a variety of courses at the University of Western Ontario law school and the Ivey School of Business. He also served as associate dean in the Western Faculty of Law.
Jay's contribution to the development of family law in Canada was surpassed only by the esteem in which he was held by his colleagues and the judiciary. He made family law simple for its practitioners and provided guidance to law students and the judiciary alike.
Jay acted as counsel to Niman Zemans Gelgoot LLP. He is sorely missed by all members of the firm.
